PM Najib and wife meet Anwar’s lawyers at court
Najib and Rosmah arrived at 2.55pm yesterday to meet with Anwar’s defence team headed by Karpal Singh.
They met with the team separately for five minutes at the meeting room on the seventh floor of the complex before leaving at 3.28pm.
Meanwhile, Karpal claimed that both Najib and Rosmah declined to be defence witnesses in the case.
Speaking after chairing the Barisan Nasional supreme council meeting here, Najib said his presence was to respect the decision by the judge.
On Aug 8, High Court judge Datuk Mohamad Zabidin Mohd Diah had allowed two applications by Anwar to interview 15 witnesses, including the Prime Minister and his wife regarding his sodomy trial.
Najib said “as a Malaysian citizen, he must respect the decision made by the judge, regardless of (his) position.”
The Prime Minister said that was the reason why he was present at court and had stated his stand.
However, he declined to say what he had informed Anwar’s defence team because he had “presented the matter according to his rights.”
“I know my rights and I have conveyed them to the lawyer representing Anwar, and Anwar was also present there,” he said.
Kita president Datuk Zaid Ibrahim said both Najib and his wife had done the right thing by giving statements in the case.
“It will dispel the notion that they are afraid and have something to hide,” he said.
Commenting on a blog written by DAP life adviser Chen Man Hin that an accused person in a criminal case had the right to face his accusers and question them in a court of law, Zaid said many people had failed to realise that the complainant in this case was Saiful and not Najib.
“Najib and his wife are witnesses and they cannot be forced to give statements,” he said.
