Sulu Rebels: OCD in parts of Mindanao on blue alert due to Sabah crisis

The Office of Civil Defense in parts of Mindanao has gone on blue alert due to developments stemming from the standoff in Sabah between followers of Sulu Sultan Jamalul Kiram III and Malaysian security forces.

In its 7 a.m. update Wednesday, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said the blue alert is being undertaken by the Office of Civil Defense for BaSulTa (Basilan, Sulu, Tawi-Tawi).
"OCD BaSulTa (is) under blue alert (and) ordered all personnel to monitor and update any related information in connection to (the) Sabah standoff,"the NDRRMC said.

On Tuesday, a group of Filipino evacuees from Sabah arrived in Tawi-Tawi. A dzBB report quoted the evacuees as saying they feared they might get caught in the conflict.

Since February, Kiram's followers had engaged Malaysian security forces in a three-week standoff that turned violent.

Last March 1, an armed clash broke out between Kiram's followers and Malaysian forces, killing at least 12 Filipinos and two Malaysian commandos.

On March 2, another clash occurred in Sabah, killing six Malaysian policemen and at least six Filipinos.

Last Tuesday, Malaysian forces assaulted the area where Kiram's followers were believed hiding.

The NDRRMC said the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao government has created a task force headed by the ARMM Department of Interior and Local Government.

It indicated this was in anticipation of a possible "mass deportation of Filipinos from Malaysia to Tawi-Tawi."

Also, a crisis management committee in the Western Mindanao Command was created to deal with possible problems stemming from the Sabah crisis. — LBG, GMA News
