Selangor MB: JAIS finding difficulty speaking to Muslim diners

SHAH ALAM (Aug 10, 2011): The Selangor government is placing responsibility on the Selangor Islamic Affairs Department (JAIS) to adhere to legal provisions when calling 12 Muslim individuals who were present at the church raid on Aug 3 for statements.

Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim said today, the state government was informed that JAIS faced difficulties to get statements from the individuals who were present at the dinner organised by the Damansara Utama Methodist Church (DUMC) due to some legal provisions.

“Their counsel Lee, Hishammuddin, Allen & Gledhill had sent a letter to the state government about the rights and responsibilities of their clients and JAIS,” he said after the post executive council meeting.

The law firm is reportedly representing 10 out of the 12 diners.

“We have surrendered it to the legal experts in JAIS to handle the matter,” he added.

According to online media reports, JAIS had issued letters to the 12 people to appear before JAIS on Aug 9 for questioning to aid investigations on the dinner but none had turned up.

JAIS Investigations and Enforcement deputy director Sharom Maarof had said that the department would apply for arrest warrants from the Syariah court to be issued to the individuals.

In a statement to the press, counsel Lim Heng Seng, who is representing 10 of the 12 individuals, said the counsel had sought for a “deferment” on the questioning process pending clarification from JAIS on certain legal matters.
